Castellina in Chianti
A hidden gem in Chianti, with a surprising underground passageway, where you can browse shops and stop for refreshments.
Castellina was once a Florentine stronghold, so it has a truly fine 14th century fort, the Rocca, with magnificent views.
Via delle Volte is charming, it was once an open street, but over centuries buildings have covered it, so it is now an arched walkway. Shops and small cafés have opened and it is quite a lovely cool interlude in the middle of the day.
There is an interesting museum with Etruscan amphorae and pop up art exhibitions. Nearby Castellina is the 6th Century Etruscan Tomb, with four burial chambers, at Monte Calvario, it is Chianti’s most famous archaeological discovery. Five more Etruscan tombs were excavated in the forests, named the Etruscan necropolis of Poggino.
