Gaiole in Chianti
This hilltown is where the very first Chianti Classico recipe was blended by Baron Bettino Ricasoli
Today Gaiole in Chianti has a relaxed local feel, and makes a peaceful place to stop for lunch. It is surrounded by vineyards and olive groves so views are as gorgeous as any in Chianti. In 1872 Baron Ricasoli in Castello di Brolio blended a superb red wine with Sangiovese grapes, and it was him who began the tradition of Chianti Classico.
Around Gaiole are a number of large castles including Brolio and a concentration of vineyards, making the town fit well into a day touring wineries.
