Radda in Chianti
A small and powerful town, in the 14th century it was the capital of the Chianti region, leading the strategic defence
Visit Radda in Chianti for a sense of the region’s embattled history. Radda lead Gaiole and Castellina against attack, however the city was eventually overcome and fairly destroyed in the late 15th century, along with much of the medieval architecture apart from remnants of the town walls. It is still a pretty town and there are some gorgeous narrow stone streets to wander through.
A particularly interesting building is the Grand Duke’s Ice House, where they would have collected winter snows to store of cooling food and drinks throughout the summer.
