Best wine cellar in Chianti, Tuscany
12th century cellars for historic tastings of Italian and Tuscan finest wines. Honoured for consecutive years by the Wine Spectator for holding ‘One of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world’.
Castello Del Nero has two wonderfully atmospheric stone cellars which are part of the original 12th century castle. Guests descend an ancient staircase and the scene will be set for a tour of the racks and wine tasting for upto eight guests.
The ancient Etruscans tended their vineyards here around 2,500 years ago and Chianti is one of the oldest wines in the world. Our sommelier conducts wine tastings that begin with the history of producers from Brunello of Montalcino, Chianti Classico or the rich bodied and prestigious Super Tuscan wines. Then follows a pleasurable hour with Tuscan hams and pecorino cheese paired with tastings of the topic in hand.
The wine list honoured by the Wine Spectator, is a magnificent book representing the riches of our cellars. There are dozens of pages dedicated to Tuscan reds alone, it is one of the many authentic pleasures of staying at Castello Del Nero.
The cellars are also a fine setting for an extra virgin olive oil tasting hosted by the hotel’s sommelier who will share his expertise and passion for Italian olive oils, including Castello Del Nero’s own estate oil. Not to be missed the honey and cheese tastings, where cheese will be combined with various types of honey, including Castello Del Nero’s very own.
